Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the archipelago. Roughly circular, it has an average diameter of 30 mls and rises to the 6,400-ft Pico de las Nieves at its centre. The varied landscape embraces desert scenery, barren cliffs cut by deep gorges, mountains and fertile tropical valleys. Las Palmas, with a population of over 300,000, is the island's capital and major port. Located in the NE, it is linked to the airport, 17 mls to the S, by a motorway which continues on as far as the major resorts of the S coast. The best beaches are all in the S as are the great dunelands of Maspalomas.
