The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife measures 60 miles long and up to 37 miles wide and is dominated by a central mountain range topped with the 12,000-ft Pico del Teide. The mountain, an extinct volcano, is crowned by a gigantic crater, 12 miles in diameter, contained within the National Park of Las Caņadas. The island also boasts lush tropical forests, spectacular valleys, sheer cliffs and beaches of both golden and dark volcanic sand. The green and humid North coast, whose main resort is Puerto de la Cruz, contrasts with the dry, hot southern areas and the newer resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Santa Cruz, in the North East, is the capital from where motorways lead to the main airport (38 miles to the South) and the principal resorts.
